If you are a new Spa owner, figuring out your spa water's chemistry can feel like a daunting task. There is an overwhelming number of Spa Chemicals that are available to purchase in the industry and figuring out what you need to use and for what reason can become confusing.
Not to worry! We will go through the step by step process of treating your spa water when you are filling your spa for the first time. Simply follow the steps and you will be a pro at chemicals before you know it!
Start filling your spa approximately 2-3 hours before the electrician arrives to hook it up. We recommend filling your spa through your filters so an air lock won't occur. Put the hose down in the filter area and begin. Filling a spa can take anywhere between 2-3 hours depending on your water pressure. Fill to about an inch above the highest jet. Once filled and powered on your owner's manual will be very helpful in guiding you through priming the jets.
Treating your water becomes a simple task once you get accustomed to your water balance. Since this is your first time treating your spa water, you will need to set aside approximately 4 hours to ensure your water is properly balanced. We highly recommend letting your spa water circulate for 30 minutes after each chemical addition and retesting to ensure that water is balanced. When balancing, always make sure your Alkalinity is balanced before moving on to your pH, and make sure your pH is balanced before adding your sanitizer (Bromine or Chlorine).
Use your test strips to check the water's total Alkalinity. Adjust it with the Alka Rise 1 cap full at a time, or the PH Reducer 1 cap full at a time. Once the Alkalinity is balanced - adjust if necessary, using PH Reducer. Then add in your Sanitizer 1 cap full at a time if using granules. If you are using the Floater Dispenser and Tabs method, turn dispenser to a level indicated on the side, input 1 tab less than # on side, and place in water. Let the water circulate for 30 minutes in between each chemical addition. Always read the directions on the chemical bottles as well before use and double check the number of Litres in your spa. After using your spa, put the suggested amount as per Litres in your spa of Spa Shock to help aid the sanitizer.
